1. The order of the pantheon of ladies is clearly significant, but there are some questions in Christine scholarship surrounding the relative importance of the examples of Parts I, II, and III. Are the ladies of Part I most important due to their foundational purpose? Or are the ladies of Part II seen as particularly worthy of emulation due to their greater resemblances to Christine’s actual medieval audience? Adding to the complexity of the question, Christine will note, later on in the book, that the lessons taught by the lives of the saints and martyrs in Part III are “more edifying to all other women than anything else” (III.3).
